doxycycline AND tetracycline are in short supply

Prescribers are feeling the pinch now that doxycycline AND tetracycline are in short supply.

The shortage is being blamed on manufacturing delays and a lack of raw materials. And even if patients can get generic doxycycline, it may be astronomically priced because fewer manufacturers are making it.

For doxycycline, switch salts if only one is available. Doxycycline hyclate (Vibramycin, etc) and monohydrate (Monodox, etc) are equally effective...but the hyclate salt might cause more GI upset.
